Sheffield Wednesday Manager Drops Massive Ian Poveda Bombshell Amid Intense Sunderland Transfer Rumors Following Leeds Departure

July 23, 2024

Sunderland is among several clubs linked with former Leeds United winger Ian Poveda during this summer’s transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has expressed continued interest in Ian Poveda but indicated that a deal is not imminent amidst ongoing transfer rumors.

Poveda made 10 Championship appearances on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last season and became a free agent in June after his contract with Leeds expired. While Sunderland, Burnley, and Luton have all shown interest in the 24-year-old, he remains without a new club with less than a month before the new season begins.

According to the Sheffield Star, the Owls are still looking for a player with Poveda’s skill set and have reported interest from several clubs, including an unnamed Ligue 1 team. When asked about the possibility of signing Poveda permanently, Rohl told the Star: “On the one side we have interest from the club and what we want to do, but then there is the player’s side and the agent’s side. There must be a match and maybe there are some things that are not a match, and so it is different. In my mind, Ian Poveda is not under contract; we will look in the end where he is and what we can do, but it must be a decision together.”

Sheffield Wednesday is also attempting to re-sign former striker Ike Ugbo after his loan spell at Hillsborough last season. Meanwhile, the Owls have secured former goalkeeper James Beadle for a second loan stint from Brighton.
