Sheffield Wednesday are likely to miss out on re-signing their former loan player, Ian Poveda.

Following his release from Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday aimed to bring Poveda back this summer. However, it appears he is on the verge of joining Sunderland, despite interest from other Championship clubs such as Luton Town and Burnley.

Poveda’s departure from Leeds United comes after a challenging four-year stint where he made only 30 first-team appearances. He joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan last January, playing ten matches in the Championship and becoming a fan favorite by providing one assist.

Owls supporters have been eager for Poveda’s return, but he now seems set to sign a four-year deal with Sunderland. Sunderland is focusing on acquiring more experienced Championship players after suffering from a lack of experience last season.

The reason behind Poveda’s decision to snub Sheffield Wednesday might lie in contract length. Injuries have plagued Poveda’s career, which may have led clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, to offer shorter-term deals. Journalist Michael Graham suggested on social media platform X that Sunderland secured Poveda by committing to a four-year contract.

Graham wrote, “Four-year deal for Poveda. A risk given his injury record, but committing to a long-term deal is probably what allowed #SAFC to beat other clubs to the punch.”

Earlier in the summer, it seemed Poveda was open to returning to Hillsborough, indicating the decision was likely in Sheffield Wednesday’s hands. However, it appears they were unwilling to match Sunderland’s four-year offer. Under Danny Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday is prioritizing smarter recruitment by signing younger players who can become valuable assets.

While Poveda, at 24, still has potential, his injury history may have made a four-year deal too risky for Sheffield Wednesday. Conversely, Sunderland is taking a gamble that, if successful, could make Poveda one of the Championship’s top attackers next season.
