Ike Ugbo Drops Major Bombshell Message to Ian Poveda Following Shock Move to Sunderland, Snubbing Sheffield Wednesday

July 25, 2024

Ike Ugbo has shared his thoughts on Ian Poveda’s recent move to Sunderland. Both players joined Sheffield Wednesday in the January transfer window and were instrumental in helping the club avoid relegation. Ugbo scored seven goals during his stint at Hillsborough, while Poveda earned praise for his impressive performances.

Sheffield Wednesday expressed a strong desire to re-sign both players, but they have missed out on Poveda, who was announced as a Sunderland player yesterday after signing a three-year contract following his release from Leeds United.

Despite not securing Poveda, Wednesday remains keen on bringing Ugbo back to the club. The Canadian striker is reportedly interested in returning to Yorkshire, but Wednesday faces stiff competition and may need to increase their bid to secure his signature.

As Ugbo awaits a call from Wednesday, he has voiced his disappointment over Poveda’s move. Responding to Sunderland’s announcement on Instagram, Ugbo commented, “Povzz !!!🥺,” indicating his sadness over his former teammate’s decision. Poveda replied with, “My bro.”

While losing out on Poveda is a setback for Sheffield Wednesday, it may not be a significant loss. Although Poveda made an impact at Hillsborough, he failed to score and made only ten appearances due to injury, featuring just three times in the final two months of the season. His injury history would have been a concern for the club, and with the addition of Jamal Lowe, the need to re-sign Poveda diminished.

On the other hand, Ugbo’s return could be crucial for Wednesday. His goals were vital last season, and he could play a key role in pushing the team toward the play-offs next term. Securing Ugbo will require a significant financial investment, but he may not be more expensive than other proven Championship goal-scorers, and his desire to return gives Wednesday an advantage.

If the club fails to land Ugbo, finding an equivalent replacement without spending a substantial amount could prove challenging.
