Mateo Joseph took to social media to react to Morten Spencer’s signing with Derby County following Spencer’s departure from Leeds United.
The 20-year-old defensive midfielder had extended his contract in February 2023 but was released from Leeds at the end of the 2023/24 season after spending five years with the club. During his time at Leeds, Spencer was a regular for the Under-21s, making 24 appearances, but he never broke into the first team.
Joseph expressed his support on Instagram on Friday (26 July), saying, “All the best, bro!”
Leeds United Youngster Finds New Opportunity After Thorp Arch Exit
Thorp Arch has been a nurturing ground for many young talents, with the club benefiting from the development and subsequent transfers of players like Archie Gray, who moved to Tottenham for £30 million [BBC Sport].
While it’s always tough for fans to see young talent leave, Spencer’s situation was understandable given that he is now 20 and had not yet made it to the first team. Under Daniel Farke’s management, only a few youngsters have managed to transition to senior football, although Farke has shown he isn’t hesitant to play young players.
Joseph, who has made 32 appearances since joining from Espanyol, is expected to play a more significant role next season. In contrast, Joe Geldhardt has struggled to find his place in Farke’s squad, and centre-back Charlie Cresswell has also moved away from Elland Road due to limited playing time.
While many young players at Thorp Arch aim to break into the first team in the coming seasons, Leeds United decided that Spencer was not ready for that step despite his five years with the club.
