Mark Robins has yet to officially appoint the new captain of Coventry City for the 2024/25 season. The leading contender for the role is Ben Sheaf, a former Arsenal prospect, who is expected to succeed long-time captain Liam Kelly, who departed this summer.

Sheaf, however, has attracted interest from several clubs, including newly promoted Ipswich Town and recently relegated Luton Town, according to transfer specialist Alan Nixon from The Sun. Fulham has also been linked with the 26-year-old. While Robins is keen to retain Sheaf, a significant offer in the range of £10 million to £15 million could challenge Coventry’s determination to keep him. Sheaf aspires to return to the Premier League, and Robins hopes this ambition can be realized at the CBS Arena. Accepting the captaincy would signal Sheaf’s intent to remain with the club.

When asked about the captaincy, Robins told CoventryLive, “No, not yet, but we’ll see. Sheafo is obviously in line for that.”

Other senior players who have previously stepped in as captain include Kyle McFadzean and Matty Godden, both of whom have since moved on. Jamie Allen and Ben Wilson, two of the longest-serving players in the squad, have also taken on the captain’s role on occasion.

Robins further explained, “Josh Eccles captained the first half against Stevenage, and we have Joel Latibeaudiere who has done it before. Players have left, and I am looking for others to step up. There’s a really good team spirit and bond between them. Even though they are young, they are really good together.

“All the new ones are brilliant lads and characters, so it’s good and been a really promising start.”
