Derby County manager Paul Warne has revealed the reason behind the hold-up in securing a new goalkeeper, as negotiations are ongoing with three potential options.
After the departure of Joe Wildsmith, the Rams have been actively seeking a new first-choice shot-stopper all summer. Currently, Josh Vickers is the sole senior goalkeeper in the squad following a season of fierce competition for his position.
Warne acknowledges the need for additional goalkeeping depth and is actively pursuing other options in the transfer market. Despite several names being linked to Derby, no signings have materialized just days before the start of the Championship season.
Speaking after his team’s pre-season win against Real Valladolid, Warne informed BBC Radio Derby that they are in talks with goalkeepers who are currently contracted to other clubs, emphasizing the challenges of negotiations in such situations.
He assured fans that they are working to secure a new goalkeeper by the following week, but emphasized the importance of patience in finding the right fit rather than rushing into a subpar signing. Warne expressed his confidence in Vickers while hinting that any new signing would have to earn the starting spot.
Although specific targets have not been confirmed, Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom from Djurgarden has been strongly linked with a move to Derby, with the transfer held up due to his involvement in European competition with his current club.
Leicester City’s Daniel Iversen has been rumored to be considering a move to Derby, but the feasibility of the deal is still uncertain. Though the specific targets are not known, it appears that efforts are being made to expedite a potential agreement in the coming days.
