Daniel Johnson is now engaged in discussions with Istanbulspor following his departure from Stoke City, as per a report by TEAMtalk. After mutually terminating his contract with Stoke City last week, the 31-year-old midfielder is now contemplating his options for a fresh start.

Johnson, who had one year remaining on his deal with Stoke City until June 2025, was sidelined under former Plymouth Argyle manager Steven Schumacher, leading to his departure that was amicable for all parties involved.

According to the latest report by TEAMtalk, Istanbulspor in Turkey is keen on bringing Johnson onboard and he has traveled to Istanbul to explore the possibility of joining them at the Esenyurt Necmi Kadıoğlu Stadium. Having been relegated from the Super Lig last season, Istanbulspor aims for an immediate promotion back to the top flight.

The free agent had joined Stoke City in July 2023 on a two-year arrangement under former manager Alex Neil with the intention of bolstering the team’s midfield depth. Making 31 appearances and scoring two goals for Stoke City, Johnson’s stint with the club didn’t pan out as planned.

Starting his career at Crystal Palace’s academy before moving to Aston Villa as a young player, the Jamaican international earned valuable experience while on loan spells at Yeovil Town, Chesterfield, and Oldham Athletic.

Eventually joining Preston North End permanently in 2014, when they were still in League One, Johnson made significant contributions to the club’s success, featuring in 336 games and scoring 57 goals during his time there.

Now faced with a pivotal decision post his Stoke City departure, the prospect of a move to Turkey presents Johnson a unique opportunity to embrace a new culture and football environment. Istanbulspor, home to former Stoke City defender Demeaco Duhaney along with ex-Hull City players Allahyar Sayyadmanesh and Jason Lokilo, could potentially be Johnson’s next sporting destination.
