Enzo Maresca explains ‘one reason’ why he’s so happy with Leicester City win at Cardiff

Enzo Maresca has lauded the extraordinary determination of his Leicester City squad, as they successfully navigated the frenetic festive fixture list while extending their lead at the top of the table.

Following their 2-0 victory over Cardiff, Maresca’s team surged ahead by eight points over second-placed Ipswich, maintaining an unbeaten streak as they tackled back-to-back away trips, first to Portman Road and then to Wales. Their nine-game undefeated run matches their season’s best.

Despite the setback of a last-minute equalizer on Boxing Day, Leicester City responded with a commanding performance at Cardiff, much to Maresca’s delight.

“I’m very happy,” Maresca remarked, “Very happy for one reason. In this moment, with this amount of games, the effort from the players has been unbelievable.”

“Playing two away games in quick succession is very challenging. Travelling to Ipswich and then tonight, that is three hours, three-and-a-half hours to arrive. Playing every three days.”

“The club has every reason to be happy, and as the manager, I’m very proud. The fans should also take pride in these players who are showcasing remarkable determination to win, especially during this period of relentless fixtures every three days. It’s not easy.”

Leicester City not only widened the gap from Ipswich, who drew 0-0 with QPR, but also maintained a double-digit lead over third-placed Southampton, despite the latter’s 17-match unbeaten streak. Moreover, they now sit 17 points ahead of Leeds after Daniel Farke’s side suffered a defeat on Friday night.

“I’m certainly pleased,” Maresca continued. “Firstly, ending the year with over 60 points, no one expected this, including myself. We need to build on this momentum as we move forward.”
