Luton Town expresses profound dismay over yet another shameful incident of racism targeting striker Elijah Adebayo, whom the club reported receiving a racist message on Instagram during their match against Sunderland. Despite Adebayo scoring his first goal of the season that night, the joy was marred by the despicable act.
The Championship club swiftly reported the incident to the police and Meta, the owner of Instagram, with investigations currently underway. This unfortunate event adds to the list of prior racist attacks against the 26-year-old player, with the club previously denouncing a series of abhorrent messages in his social media accounts just a year ago.
In a resolute statement, Luton Town asserts, “Just as we stood firm a year ago, and just as we will unflinchingly continue to do whenever a member of our team faces abuse, we vow our unwavering support to Elijah.” To the perpetrator who anonymously targeted Adebayo, the club sends a direct message: “We see you, and you are not anonymous to us, unlike the faceless accounts we unfortunately encounter all too often these days.”
Committing to combatting racism and all forms of abuse, the club emphasizes its ongoing efforts towards education and awareness. Recently, players Jacob Brown and Mads Andersen participated in an anti-discrimination workshop at Ferrars Junior School in Luton, organized by the Luton Town Community Trust as part of the EFL’s Together Against Racism campaign.
