The transfer saw the Old Gold shelling out £37m to secure the services of the right-back, who had previously achieved success with Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey and two LaLiga titles.
Despite an initially shaky start, Semedo has blossomed in the Premier League under the guidance of Gary O’Neil, particularly excelling in a defensive setup that includes five at the back. While Wolves have significantly benefitted from Semedo’s contributions on the field, they are conscious that their time with the Portuguese international may be limited.
Semedo’s contract is set to run out in the summer of 2025, throwing uncertainty on his future with the club. Journalist Liam Keen highlighted this issue on the E&S Wolves Podcast, mentioning the lack of ongoing discussions regarding an extension for the 30-year-old.
Speculating on Semedo’s potential plans, Keen noted the challenges in retaining the player, given his significant wages and the possibility of attracting offers from other clubs for a fresh start. As Wolves adhere to a specific wage structure, maintaining both Semedo and another high earner like Pablo Sarabia could prove difficult in the long run.
Despite his importance in O’Neil’s tactics, Semedo’s contractual situation raises questions about his continuity with Wolves. As the club faces tough decisions regarding future contract negotiations, balancing financial considerations with the need for on-field talent becomes a pressing dilemma.
