The growing consensus is that Said Benrahma’s future at West Ham under David Moyes appears uncertain.
The manager’s recent comments, emphasizing the need to play Lucas Paqueta “out of position” due to a shortage on the left, serve as a clear indication. Benrahma, an Algerian, has had a limited role in the squad this season, with the manager’s recent decisions further underlining this situation.
Indicating their intention to be active in the January transfer window, a top source within the club emphasized the necessity to sell players to create space in the squad and raise funds, partially to comply with financial fair play (FFP) regulations.
Given Benrahma’s lack of game time and increased interest from French, Turkish, and Saudi clubs, it’s unsurprising that the 28-year-old has been linked with a move away in January. Furthermore, being left out of Algeria’s AFCON squad potentially enhances his appeal as a transfer asset.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, who has strong ties to Moyes, West Ham is reportedly in talks with Lyon over a potential loan deal for Benrahma. However, any such agreement would only be approved if Lyon’s owner agrees to a £20m obligation to buy, contingent on Lyon securing safety in Ligue 1.
Nixon suggests that Lyon is confident in their ability to persuade Benrahma to consider the move should their owner consent to West Ham’s terms. Lyon, aiming to secure their place in the league after a challenging season, believes they can entice Benrahma to join them.
If West Ham manages to finalize this deal, it would represent an impressive business move. Additionally, it would provide Benrahma with a fresh start while potentially ensuring the club recoups a significant portion of their initial investment, just £5m shy of what they paid Brentford for the player.
Nixon also indicates that Moyes would be at ease, knowing that a replacement for Benrahma could be secured if a deal with Lyon or another club materializes.
