Ally McCoist has launched a scathing attack on VAR, demanding it be scrapped from the Scottish Premiership after a weekend of contentious decisions. The Rangers legend was furious with the decision not to send off Cammy Kerr for a challenge on Mikey Moore, which denied Rangers a goalscoring opportunity.
McCoist also branded the decision to send off Auston Trusty as a “terrible decision”, echoing Martin O’Neill’s claims that referee Matthew MacDermid was set to give Trusty a warning before VAR intervened. He was also angry about Richard King’s red card in Motherwell’s win over St Mirren.
Speaking about the decisions, McCoist said: “The first thing you would say is the Hibs player doesn’t cover himself in glory, but come on guys, it is a terrible, terrible decision. Nobody come and tell me about violent conduct, because it’s not. The guy is holding him and he puts his hand down to get rid of him.”
He added: “See the people who are doing our VAR, they are inept, they are just not good. We need to get rid of it, we have to get rid of VAR, because they are embarrassing themselves.”
McCoist was also furious with the decision that denied Moore a chance to win the game for Rangers: “Embarrassing, absolutely embarrassing. The officiating at the weekend in Scotland was absolutely horrendous. We brought VAR in to help them. It’s actually showing them up. If a referee makes a mistake then fair enough, but if someone is sitting watching it seven, eight, nine times and still gets it wrong, what chance have we got?”
