Celtic dismissed Wilfried Nancy earlier this week and moved quickly to install Martin O’Neill as head coach until the end of the season.
Nancy’s departure briefly stalled Celtic’s interest in Hajduk Split defender Niko Sigur. Reports in Croatia earlier in the week suggested the deal had been paused, but also claimed the move is now moving forward again and edging closer to completion.
Croatian outlet 24 Sata has provided an update on the situation, focusing on Celtic’s pursuit of the 22 year old, who is capable of playing both at right back and in midfield.
The report highlights Celtic’s strong relationship with the SA33 agency, which represents Sigur. The club have signed several players from the same agency in recent years, making their interest in the Canada international far from unexpected.
Sigur was close to completing a switch to Glasgow, but the change in management has led to the transfer being temporarily placed on hold. The final decision is now expected to rest with O’Neill, who must decide whether to approve the deal.
If Sigur leaves Hajduk Split, Luka Hodak would be left as their only recognised right back, meaning the Croatian side would need to source a replacement before the window closes.
24 Sata adds that Sigur’s future remains uncertain, noting that there are several factors still to be resolved and that the outcome could have a significant impact on Hajduk’s plans for the remainder of the season.
The paper also suggests that Sigur may stay in Croatia until the summer, arguing that he could then look for a move to a league they consider stronger than Scotland, effectively urging him to pass on a January transfer to Celtic.
