Supporters of Rapid Vienna have come under heavy criticism after Celtic transfer target Filip Rogza was hit by thrown objects during their 2-0 defeat to Sturm Graz.
Recently, it was revealed that the Celtic FC hierarchy are highly interested in the Graz winger and are considering a summer approach after making initial contact in the January transfer window.
The attacker drew Celtic’s attention after impressing in their 2-1 win over the Scottish side in the Europa League earlier this campaign.
Rogza — who moved to the Austrian outfit from KS Cracovia last year — will not celebrate his 20th birthday until next August. Despite his young age, he has already earned three senior caps for Poland national football team and was named on the bench for their thrilling 3-2 loss to Sweden national football team in the World Cup play-off final.
With his side leading 2-0 on Easter Sunday, Rogza was taken off with nine minutes left and was showered with drink containers as he walked along the sideline.
The youngster brushed off the situation with a playful smile, but a member of Graz’s backroom staff was knocked to the ground after also being struck by an object.
The ugly scenes led current Admira Wacker manager and TV analyst Thomas Silberberger to strongly condemn those responsible as “complete idiots”.
Speaking on Sky Sport Austria’s coverage of the game, he said: “I simply cannot understand it. Of course he’s provoking people with the jersey – but the player also gets insulted every time the ball goes out of bounds.
“That’s perfectly normal, he puts up with it – but apparently something has to happen again. Unfortunately, you have to say: These are complete idiots!”
After the match, Rapid head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup also addressed the situation, stating: “I don’t like this at all. Everyone who is part of the game here should be safe.
