Jens Berthel Askou voiced frustration after Celtic’s 3-1 win over Motherwell, expressing concern that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s early challenge had put Elijah Just’s World Cup prospects at risk.

The tackle came just six minutes into a high-intensity encounter between two of the Premiership’s top four sides. Oxlade-Chamberlain was booked, but Askou said he could not understand why referee John Beaton was not directed to the monitor to review the incident given the nature of the contact and the consequences for Just. The Motherwell manager was careful to describe the challenge as clumsy rather than malicious, but his concern for the New Zealand international was clear.

He drew a comparison with the match’s pivotal moment, when Emmanuel Longelo was penalised for impeding Daizen Maeda at a corner midway through the second half. Beaton had initially awarded a goal kick before a VAR review overturned the decision, resulting in a penalty and a red card for Longelo. Substitute Tomas Cvancara converted from the spot to make it 2-1, turning the game in Celtic’s favour after Motherwell had led through Just’s first-half goal.

Askou felt the Oxlade-Chamberlain challenge warranted the same level of scrutiny. He also noted that the same player was involved in a second incident later in the game that could have resulted in a second yellow card. He acknowledged that these are the moments that can swing a match, and that when they do not go your way, you need to be exceptional to overcome them. His view was that Motherwell were good, but not quite good enough to deal with the accumulation of decisions.

His primary concern after the match was Just’s physical condition. He described the midfielder as looking as though he had been in a war, with visible swelling on his leg. Despite finishing the game, Just had been moved to left full-back by the end and was still trying to influence play in a more advanced role. Askou praised his commitment while expressing hope that the injury would not affect his chances of featuring at the World Cup.
