Keith Hackett Backs VAR Decision in Celtic’s Victory Over Dundee
Former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee Keith Hackett has defended the VAR intervention that led to Colby Donovan conceding a penalty during Celtic’s 2-1 win at Dundee.
The 19-year-old right-back was penalised for handball following a pitch-side monitor review by referee Steven McLean, allowing Simon Murray to equalise from the spot shortly before the hour mark. Despite the setback, Kelechi Iheanacho’s late winner secured three crucial points for the champions.
Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, praised the officiating. “The arm is extended away from the body of the defender, and it struck the arm. VAR was correct to intervene and award a penalty kick for handball. Handballs, of course, are subjective decisions, but the VAR’s intervention was spot-on. It allowed the referee to take a clear look at the extended arm away from the body. The outcome? A penalty kick was correctly awarded by the referee. A good piece of officiating.”
The incident capped a difficult afternoon for the academy graduate, who struggled to replicate his previous performances. However, Celtic’s recovery ensured the penalty did not prove costly in their pursuit of the title.
The victory keeps O’Neill’s side firmly in contention. Despite Hearts maintaining top spot following a 2-2 draw against Livingston, and Rangers sitting just one point behind after a 4-2 win over Dundee United, Celtic remain within striking distance. They occupy third place, three points adrift of the leaders, with St Mirren their next opponents before the league splits.
