Roberto Martinez has emerged as an early contender for the permanent managerial position at Celtic.
The Spaniard is currently in charge of Portugal and is set to see his contract expire after this summer’s World Cup. With that in mind, there is growing speculation that he could return to club football for the first time in almost ten years.
He previously won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic and guided Everton into European competition during his first season at Goodison Park. However, his time on Merseyside ended after a third campaign that concluded with an 11th place finish. Since then, he has remained in international management, spending six years with Belgium before taking over Portugal in 2023.
Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs, who played during Martinez’s spell at Everton, has voiced concerns about whether he would be the right fit at Parkhead. In his view, the early success at Everton was built on the defensive structure left behind by the previous regime, with an added attacking edge that made the side entertaining. Over time, though, performances became slower and more predictable, leading to divided opinion among supporters.
There are also questions surrounding his international record. Belgium possessed one of the most gifted squads of their generation yet fell short in major tournaments. Even at Portugal, there had been uncertainty about his future before their Nations League triumph, and his planned departure after the World Cup has only added to the speculation.
Stubbs believes Celtic should approach the situation carefully. While Martinez has held high profile positions, his track record at the very top level is open to scrutiny, and supporters may expect more guaranteed success.
Attention also turns to other possible options. Martin O’Neill has not entirely ruled out extending his stay beyond this season, although he has indicated reluctance to take the role permanently. If that remains the case, alternative candidates will come into sharper focus as the summer approaches.
