Kyogo could yet be set for a reunion with a familiar face after reports claimed Swansea City are considering a shock approach for the Birmingham striker, which would see him link up again with former Celtic teammate Adam Idah.
The pair were competing for the number nine role at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers not long ago. Idah arrived from Norwich in the summer of 2024 for £9 million but ultimately lost out to the Japan international and later made the move to Swansea.
Kyogo followed a different path, leaving Celtic six months later for Rennes. That switch failed to deliver the impact he hoped for, but a subsequent move to Birmingham was widely viewed as a statement signing. He is now starting to find his feet, scoring in each of his last two outings.
A return to Celtic has been mentioned in recent weeks, although interim boss Martin O’Neill played down that possibility and instead sanctioned the arrival of Czech striker Tomas Cvancara.
It now appears Kyogo is more likely to remain in the EFL, even if his future at Birmingham is not guaranteed beyond the next few days. Wales Online, a sister publication, has backed up claims that Swansea are monitoring his situation and could explore a move before the transfer window shuts.
The renewed interest is understood to be linked to Idah picking up an injury that is expected to sideline him for a sizeable portion of the rest of the campaign. However, any deal is far from straightforward, with Kyogo’s sizeable wages seen as a major stumbling block.
Those financial demands may also explain why Celtic opted to look elsewhere in their search for attacking reinforcements.
Celtic return to Premiership action tomorrow with a huge clash against Hearts at the top of the table. New signing Cvancara is available, though O’Neill has urged caution over expectations.
“He’s quick, agile and desperate to prove himself,” the manager said earlier this week. “But if people think he’s an instant solution to every problem, I’m not sure it’s fair to put that level of pressure on him.”
