Oliver Glasner has conceded he should have pushed harder for additional signings during the summer, admitting the relentless demands of the Premier League have taken a heavy toll on Crystal Palace’s squad.
The Eagles are in the process of completing a club record £35 million deal for Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson as they look to address mounting injury problems, along with the absence of Ismaila Sarr at the Africa Cup of Nations. Palace, who lifted the FA Cup last season, have seen their options reduced significantly in recent weeks.
Glasner previously expressed frustration over the club’s transfer strategy following a home defeat to Manchester United in November, pointing out that Palace were entering European competition for the first time and needed greater investment rather than restraint.
Since then, the South London side have moved to strengthen, with Johnson arriving from Spurs after the summer sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal. The Wales international will not be registered in time to feature against Newcastle this weekend, but his signing represents a major statement of intent.
Reflecting on the situation, Glasner accepted responsibility and said he underestimated the physical strain of competing in England while also balancing European football. He explained that the absence of a winter break and the intensity of Premier League duels make injuries far more likely.
The Palace boss said he believed the squad size was sufficient, but admitted he did not fully account for how quickly multiple fitness issues could arise. Knee and foot problems, along with Sarr’s ankle injury and partial ligament damage, have all contributed to the current shortage, factors he acknowledged are often beyond a manager’s control.
Glasner added that, with hindsight, he should have been firmer in requesting one or two extra additions to better protect the squad from the demands of the season.
Palace’s injury list continues to grow, with Will Hughes forced off with an adductor issue during the 1-1 draw with Fulham, extending their winless run to six matches. He joins Chris Richards, Daniel Munoz, Daichi Kamada and Eddie Nketiah on the sidelines.
The Eagles travel to Newcastle on Sunday, returning to a ground where they suffered a heavy defeat last season. Glasner expects another intense challenge, praising the Magpies’ pace and physical presence, particularly in midfield, but insists his side will aim to produce a stronger showing this time around.
