Celtic F.C. are preparing for one of their sternest European examinations under Martin O’Neill as they welcome VfB Stuttgart to Glasgow for Thursday’s Europa League play off first leg.
The build up has been dominated by the ongoing absence of the Green Brigade. Speaking ahead of the tie, O’Neill admitted it is regrettable that the situation has led to empty seats, though he understands discussions have taken place. He has been told progress has been made following talks between the Celtic Fans Collective and the club’s board, raising hopes the ban could soon be lifted.
The restrictions have been in place since November. Should they be removed, the atmosphere inside Celtic Park would receive a major lift at a crucial stage of the season, with Celtic chasing domestic silverware while also aiming to make headway in Europe.
O’Neill stressed the importance of unity and pointed to the dramatic weekend victory over Kilmarnock F.C. as evidence of how influential the supporters can be. Celtic overturned a two goal deficit to win 3–2 at Rugby Park, attacking towards their own fans in the second half. He believes the backing from behind the goal played a significant role in inspiring the turnaround, which culminated in Julian Araujo celebrating wildly with the travelling support.
Reflecting on his first spell in charge, O’Neill also cast his mind back to Celtic’s run to the 2003 UEFA Cup final. During that campaign, a home clash with Liverpool F.C. stood out for the sheer volume inside the stadium. He recalled struggling to hear his assistant, the late John Robertson, for the opening stages because of the deafening noise.
That is the sort of environment he hopes to see recreated against Stuttgart and in the weeks ahead. For O’Neill, restoring togetherness among players, staff and supporters would benefit everyone connected to the club and could provide the edge required on another big European night at Celtic Park.
