Championship pace-setters Coventry City are reported to have opened discussions over a move for Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse during the January transfer window.
Daily Telegraph reporter John Percy claims the Sky Blues are keen to strengthen their attacking options and have identified the 20-year-old as a potential addition. Coventry are understood to be exploring a loan deal and have already held talks with Palace about the availability of the young wide player.
Although Coventry face competition from other Championship clubs, Frank Lampard is said to be optimistic about striking an agreement with the South London side in the near future.
Esse joined Crystal Palace from Millwall in January 2025 after emerging as a highly regarded talent at his boyhood club. The London-born winger progressed through Millwall’s academy and caught the eye with his performances, earning a move to the Premier League.
Opportunities have been limited since his switch to Selhurst Park. Esse has featured six times this season, totalling just over 200 minutes of action, and has struggled to secure a regular role in the first team. Despite that, his potential remains well regarded, and a temporary return to the Championship could offer the game time he needs.
Coventry’s interest makes sense given their search for extra width in attack. Sitting top of the table, Lampard’s side are firmly in the promotion race and are looking to add quality without disrupting the core of the squad. While key players are expected to stay put, the club is actively pursuing reinforcements, with Esse emerging as a leading candidate.
