Everton have endured a quiet opening to the January transfer window.
Despite some frustration among supporters over recent performances under David Moyes, the Blues are one of 11 Premier League sides yet to make a signing this month. The only movement so far has seen Harrison Armstrong recalled from his loan spell at Preston, while Martin Sherif has also returned from Rotherham as Everton deal with injuries and absences caused by the Africa Cup of Nations.
Moyes is not facing immediate pressure over his position, but reinforcements would go a long way toward lifting the mood at Goodison Park. Fans are keen to see the squad strengthened as the club looks to push back into the top half of the table and lay foundations for a European challenge next season.
Everton face Crystal Palace competition for Zakaria El Ouahdi
Right back appears to be one of Everton’s most urgent priorities. With Seamus Coleman sidelined, Nathan Patterson out of favour and Jake O’Brien offering limited attacking threat when deployed wide, Moyes is short of reliable options in that role.
Guardian Sport reporter Ed Aarons has named Genk and Morocco defender Zakaria El Ouahdi as a potential target. However, Everton may not have a clear run at the 24 year old.
Aarons reports that Crystal Palace are already in advanced discussions for the Belgium born full back, who has one senior cap for Morocco and was not selected for the current AFCON squad. If Everton are serious, they would need to step in and beat Palace to an agreement.
Genk are believed to be open to offers in the region of £12 million for El Ouahdi, having signed him from RWD Molenbeek for around £2 million in September 2023. He has featured 20 times in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and registering two assists.
El Ouahdi’s stance on his future
El Ouahdi attracted interest last summer following a strong campaign in Belgium. Sofascore data shows he averaged a 7.19 rating in the 2024 to 25 Pro League season, placing him 11th among defenders. Although his rating has dropped slightly this term, he remains on the radar of Premier League clubs.
Speaking in the summer, the Moroccan international played down the idea of a move, stressing his commitment to Genk. He said he was fully focused on his season, felt settled at the club and believed his chances of staying were almost certain. He also highlighted the confidence he draws from the support of the fans as a major reason for wanting to remain.
That loyalty is clear, but circumstances can change quickly. With Premier League interest growing, Genk sitting in mid table and El Ouahdi not quite matching last season’s form, a transfer could become more realistic as the window progresses.
