Celtic supporters are still waiting for meaningful transfer activity to be finalised this January, with Martin O’Neill keen to strengthen his squad ahead of the title run-in.
Up to now, Celtic have secured two signings this month, bringing Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara into the team.
That said, it is abundantly clear the squad still requires further additions, with frustration beginning to grow among fans over what is being viewed as a lack of urgency in the market.
So when Martin O’Neill was informed that sections of the Celtic support are unhappy with the slow progress in January, the Hoops manager had a response ready.
Martin O’Neill ‘reasonably confident’ Celtic will complete transfers
O’Neill is fully aware that reinforcements are needed to aid his bid to retain Celtic’s title, and the supporters feel the same.
After being told that Celtic fans are upset by the limited business so far, O’Neill addressed the situation directly.
O’Neill told Celtic TV, “Well, I think that’s the case, I think, for the transfer window. There’s a certain length of time and after January, it’s all over.
So, if there’s an anxiety, I don’t know whether there’s an anger there. If you’re telling me that’s there, then I’ll take your word for it.
“But there would be an anxiety, a worry getting back to it, that we get the players in. But I’m confident, or reasonably confident, that we can do it.
Where Celtic still need to strengthen
An additional striker would certainly help. Kelechi Iheanacho is due back in training this week, but doubts remain over how reliable his hamstrings will be.
A new left winger to provide cover and competition for Daizen Maeda would also make sense, along with a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.
Will O’Neill manage to secure all of those positions? Probably not, but supporters can always hope.
