Celtic have announced the arrival of striker Tomas Cvancara from Borussia Monchengladbach, with the forward describing the move as a huge honour.
The 25-year-old has joined the Scottish champions on a loan deal from the Bundesliga side, which includes an option for Celtic to make the transfer permanent next summer for a fee understood to be close to £7 million. Cvancara has eight senior caps for the Czech Republic and began his professional career at Jablonec before earning a move to Sparta Prague in 2022.
His time in Prague proved prolific, as he scored 24 goals in 49 matches, form that earned him a £9 million switch to Germany the following year. However, he found opportunities harder to come by in the Bundesliga, registering seven goals across 53 appearances for Monchengladbach. After spending the first part of the season on loan with Turkish side Antalyaspor, the tall forward has now secured a move to Glasgow for the remainder of the campaign.
Cvancara is Celtic’s second signing of the transfer window, following the earlier loan addition of Bournemouth full-back Julian Araujo. He is also the first player brought in under interim manager Martin O’Neill.
Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Cvancara said he was thrilled to be joining the club and eager to make an impact. He highlighted the challenges ahead and expressed his determination to contribute to success for the supporters, adding that Celtic’s status as one of the world’s great clubs made the move especially special.
O’Neill also welcomed the striker to Parkhead, stating that the club believes Cvancara has strong attributes and will add real quality to the squad as the season progresses.
