Leicester City’s transformation post their Premier League relegation has seen several seasoned players either sidelined or relegated to minimal appearances at the King Power Stadium.

Upon the arrival of Danish goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Brondby last summer, it became apparent that Danny Ward’s future at the club was uncertain.

Hermansen swiftly claimed the top goalkeeper spot, pushing Ward down the ranks to joint third-choice alongside Daniel Iversen, while Jakub Stolarczyk, untested, was also ahead in the pecking order.

Ward, a key figure under Brendan Rodgers, played 26 Premier League games last season but lost his place before Rodgers’ departure. The 30-year-old hasn’t featured in any competition in 2023-24 despite having a year-and-a-half left on his contract extension signed in 2021. Now, a lifeline seems to be emerging for him with interest from two clubs.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon via Patreon, Cardiff City and Sheffield United are eyeing Ward in the January transfer window.

Cardiff aims to loan Ward for the season’s latter half, seeking to provide him regular game time and possibly secure his spot in Wales’ EURO 2024 squad. Meanwhile, Sheffield United, struggling in the top flight, reportedly contacted Leicester about a potential deal, preferring either a sale or a loan with an obligation to buy.

While Cardiff seeks an upgrade on their underwhelming loan goalkeeper, Runar Alex Runarsson from Arsenal, Sheffield United is eyeing Ward as a replacement for Wes Foderingham.

Although Ward has yet to play this season, his experience could be invaluable for a stint in the Premier League. Foderingham’s uninspiring performances may prompt United to pursue alternatives.

Cardiff might be banking on Sheffield United cooling their interest, but they are keen on reinforcing their goalkeeping options. Both clubs are likely to intensify their pursuit of Ward, with Cardiff having contingency plans if the move to Bramall Lane materializes.
