Dean Ashton commended striker Danny Ings for his crucial involvement in winning West Ham a penalty during their 2-2 draw at Sheffield United, describing his contribution as “magnificent.”

Ings was brought down by Gustavo Hamer after maneuvering past Jack Robinson, prompting referee Michael Salisbury to award the penalty. James Ward-Prowse successfully converted the spot-kick in the 79th minute, only for Oli McBurnie to deny West Ham victory in controversial circumstances.

Former West Ham striker Ashton, speaking on Sky Sports News, praised Ings for his pivotal role in earning the penalty, emphasizing his exceptional center-forward play. Ashton highlighted the moment when the ball was played into the corner of the 18-yard box to Ings, who swiftly controlled it with a skillful maneuver and attempted to play it past Jack Robinson. Although it didn’t go as planned, Hamer’s subsequent challenge on Ings resulted in a clear penalty.

Although the final scoreline at Bramall Lane was disappointing for West Ham, Ings’s performance deserves recognition. Despite questions surrounding his position at the London Stadium, he displayed sharpness throughout the game, particularly in the lead-up to the penalty incident where he showcased his attacking prowess.

As noted on BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Ings led West Ham players in various statistical categories, including shots, dribbles attempted, chances created, and touches in the opposition box. While West Ham’s manager David Moyes may still be seeking a prolific goalscorer, Ings’s performance undoubtedly demonstrated his ability to contribute effectively when called upon.

In this context, the spotlight was on Ings to deliver, and he unequivocally rose to the occasion, underlining his value as a potential asset for West Ham’s attacking force.
