Chris Sutton has unleashed scathing criticism on Everton, calling the club an “embarrassment” for constructing such a “failing” team, especially after their recent 3-1 home defeat against West Ham United.
The loss at Goodison Park on Saturday (2 March) marked Everton’s 10th consecutive game without a win in the Premier League, leaving them precariously close to the relegation zone despite initially leading through a goal from Beto in the second half.
With Everton hovering just five points clear of relegation and potentially facing further penalties for financial fair play violations, Sutton didn’t hold back during a live broadcast on BBC Radio Five Live. In a heated exchange with an Everton supporter, he criticized the club’s lavish spending, questioning the value they’ve received from their investments.
“You’ve thrown away half a billion, and look at the state of your squad – it’s failing. When was the last time your team even cracked the top six? You’ve spent over half a billion, and your team is in shambles,” Sutton remarked.
The looming threat of relegation hangs over Everton as the club’s financial mismanagement under Farhad Moshiri’s ownership comes to a head. Despite a massive outlay on players, the return on the pitch has been dismal, leaving the club in a precarious position both financially and competitively.
