Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has weighed in on the controversial Tynecastle incident that left Rangers manager frustrated with a contentious decision. During Saturday’s 3-3 Premiership draw against Hearts, Rangers were denied what many believed to be a clear penalty when Cyriel Dessers was brought down inside the box by Hearts defender Frankie Kent.

Despite outcry and surprise from BBC Scotland pundits at the lack of VAR intervention, operator David Dickinson chose not to review the incident, leaving on-field referee Don Robertson to let play continue. This decision, or lack thereof, sparked debate and raised questions about the effectiveness of VAR in capturing such incidents.

Gallagher echoed the sentiments of Hearts manager Philippe Clement, expressing his astonishment that the penalty appeal was not referred for review. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch segment, Gallagher remarked, “I thought it was a foul, and I was surprised it wasn’t reviewed. Scottish VAR has been stringent on handballs and shirt pulling, and though it’s about the extent of the pull, I believe a penalty should have been awarded.”

Clement, in his post-match interview, voiced his disappointment at the officiating and called for more definitive decision-making ahead of the upcoming Scottish Cup final against Celtic. He emphasized the need for greater accuracy in crucial moments like the one witnessed at Tynecastle, underlining the significance of precise officiating in high-stakes matches.
