Celtic found themselves caught up in another refereeing flashpoint on Saturday night.
Tomas Cvancara was at the centre of the debate after a challenge involving Dundee defender Luke Graham. While the decision ultimately did not derail Celtic, who went on to see off Dundee after extra time in the Scottish Cup, it left plenty of frustration in the first half.
Ryan Lee, the referee on the night, penalised Graham for pushing Cvancara and awarded a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area. There was no argument about whether it was a foul. The dispute centred on where it happened.
Several observers, including Michael Stewart on Premier Sports commentary, believed the contact carried into the box and should have resulted in a penalty. The Scottish FA later outlined why the original call was not overturned.
Why VAR backed the original decision
The explanation will do little to ease the irritation among Celtic supporters. According to guidance from the Scottish FA, the contact from Graham was classed as a push that began outside the penalty area and did not meet the criteria for a spot kick.
Because the action was judged to have started outside the box, VAR chose not to intervene or advise the referee to review the incident on the monitor.
BBC Sport relayed the reasoning behind the decision, stating that incidents of this nature can only lead to a penalty if holding continues into the area. In this case, pushing is only punishable at the point of initial contact, which officials determined was outside the box.
As a result, the free kick stood and Celtic were left to feel they had missed out, even if it did not ultimately change the outcome of the tie.
