Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wasted no time making his mark at Celtic, delivering a decisive statement on his debut.
Introduced from the bench, the midfielder rewarded Martin O’Neill’s faith with a superbly taken winner in stoppage time. It was a dream introduction for the former England international, who celebrated passionately despite already enjoying a trophy laden career.
Since arriving in Glasgow, Oxlade-Chamberlain has spoken openly about why he chose Celtic. Conversations with trusted voices played a key role in his decision, including friends of his father, former Hoops goalkeeper Joe Hart and lifelong Celtic supporter Andy Robertson.
Oxlade-Chamberlain sends reminder to Robertson
Robertson was thrilled to see his close friend join the club he supports, and Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed that the Liverpool captain had been in constant contact before the move was finalised.
After scoring the winner, the new signing joked that he expected a congratulatory message.
He said he would be disappointed if Robertson had not been in touch, adding that he would soon be checking his phone and would not hesitate to remind his old teammate if necessary. With a smile, he suggested people would now know he is very much alive and kicking.
Reflecting on the match itself, Oxlade-Chamberlain acknowledged that life at a dominant club brings different challenges. Not every victory is straightforward, and sometimes teams must grind out results rather than cruise to them.
He admitted Celtic created enough chances in the opening stages against Livingston to put the game beyond doubt before the interval. Improving that clinical edge is important, he said, but maintaining belief and composure when chances are missed is just as vital.
He also praised Livingston for their threat, particularly from set pieces, and stressed that no opponent in the league can be taken lightly. For him, it was an early lesson in the competitive nature of Scottish football.
Ultimately, he insisted the objective remains simple. Each time Celtic step onto the pitch, the expectation is to win.
Winter arrivals making their mark
Oxlade-Chamberlain is not the only recent addition looking to impress. Julian Araujo has quickly nailed down the right back position and become a regular starter.
Tomas Cvancara has enjoyed a run in the side up front, though he is currently searching for a goal after drawing a blank in his last two outings. He did, however, provide an eye catching assist for Yang Hyun-Jun on his debut against Hearts.
Junior Adamu is pushing for a starting role and announced himself with a well taken equaliser against Dundee in his first appearance.
Joel Mvuka’s introduction proved more challenging, as he was substituted at half time in that same match.
