Crystal Palace Agree Terms for Scottish Teenager Harris Afzal
Crystal Palace have reached an agreement in principle to sign 16-year-old Queen’s Park left back Harris Afzal, beating Southampton in the race for one of Scottish football’s most promising young talents.
Chairman Steve Parish made what has been described as a “decisive move” to secure the Scottish youth international, who has drawn comparisons to Liverpool defender Andy Robertson. The deal, worth approximately £40,000 with a significant sell-on clause, mirrors the path Robertson took from the Glasgow club to English football.
Afzal’s athleticism, direct running and attacking intent from wide areas have generated excitement among scouts. Palace will hope he follows a similar trajectory to Robertson, who developed into one of the finest Scottish defenders of his generation after leaving Queen’s Park.

Southampton had appeared favourites after inviting Afzal for an extended trial, and remain in contention having agreed similar terms with Queen’s Park. The final decision rests with the player, who must choose between Southampton’s renowned development pathway and Palace’s Premier League platform.
Celtic and Rangers had also monitored Afzal’s progress, but the teenager appears set to follow Robertson’s example by moving south rather than remaining in Scotland. Parish’s personal involvement demonstrates Palace’s commitment to youth recruitment even during managerial uncertainty.
