Manchester United have reportedly joined the growing list of clubs tracking Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta ahead of the new season.
Mateta looked set for a move away from Selhurst Park during the recent transfer window, but a proposed switch fell through late on. He has remained with Palace for now, though there is a strong expectation that the French forward will seek a fresh challenge once the current campaign comes to an end.
Football Insider claim United are now firmly in the mix for the 28-year-old, with decision-makers at Old Trafford believing his Premier League experience could make him an attractive option as they plan their summer business.
Mateta first arrived in England in early 2021 after impressing at Mainz, initially joining Palace on loan before the deal was made permanent the following summer. Since then, he has developed into a key figure for the Eagles and has enjoyed his most productive spell over the last two seasons.
He was a standout performer during Palace’s memorable FA Cup success in the 2025–26 campaign and has continued that level of form into the current season. Those displays have not gone unnoticed, with clubs across Europe monitoring his situation closely.
Why Mateta’s move to Milan collapsed
With interest building, Mateta pushed for a mid-season exit and even submitted a transfer request. Palace were open to selling, given he had 18 months left on his contract, and a move to AC Milan appeared close.
However, the deal ultimately broke down. Reports suggest a medical concern, believed to be linked to a long-standing knee issue, scuppered the transfer and forced the striker to remain in south London.
United still keen despite concerns
Despite those worries, Manchester United remain interested. The club were first linked with Mateta last summer and are understood to have revisited the idea during talks earlier this year.
With the striker entering the final year of his contract this summer, Palace may be willing to accept a reduced fee, making the deal more appealing. While United’s need for a new number nine has eased slightly due to Benjamin Sesko’s recent form, Mateta is still viewed internally as a strong option.
Several clubs are expected to keep tabs on his situation in the coming months, and it remains to be seen whether United decide to act on their interest once the season draws to a close.
