Julian Araujo has quickly endeared himself to Celtic supporters since arriving on loan from Bournemouth in January, with his intensity, passion and commitment making him an instant favourite at Parkhead. Recent social media activity from his cousin has added fuel to the fire, suggesting a permanent move remains a real possibility.
Charlie Mulgrew, however, has offered a more grounded perspective on what such a transfer would actually require.
Speaking on Go Radio, Mulgrew said he does not believe Celtic would spend £10 million on a right-back, pointing to the presence of Alistair Johnston as the primary obstacle. In his view, there is simply no realistic scenario in which the club invests that kind of money to have two top-quality right-backs competing for the same position.
He was generous in his praise for Araujo, describing him as a breath of fresh air whose displays at Ibrox in particular showcased exactly the kind of energy and commitment Celtic supporters respond to. But he maintained that Johnston, when fully fit, remains a strong option in that position and could be argued to be the superior full-back.
When it was put to him that Johnston could potentially be sold to make room, Mulgrew acknowledged the possibility but remained sceptical that the fee would be directed toward a replacement right-back. He also referenced the investment already made in Kieran Tierney’s wages this season, noting that Tierney’s connection to the club made that a unique case. His broader point was that if Celtic are going to spend significant money, it should be directed toward a forward capable of generating a substantial future sell-on fee rather than a defensive position that already has reasonable cover.
For supporters hoping to see the deal made permanent, Mulgrew’s assessment is a reality check. The reported £10 million price tag may simply be too high given the options Celtic already have available at right-back.
