Regardless of how the current season concludes, Celtic face a significant amount of work in the summer transfer market. Poor recruitment last year cost the club a place in the Champions League, and the same failings may yet see them surrender the Premiership title, currently sitting two points behind leaders Hearts ahead of a crucial trip to Tannadice. Across multiple positions there is work to do, but signing a new goalkeeper has to sit at the very top of the priority list.
Until recently, Kasper Schmeichel had been the first-choice stopper at Parkhead, but following a series of errors Viljami Sinisalo came into the side for the trip to Stuttgart and has started each of the five matches since. Schmeichel’s absence had been unexplained and somewhat mysterious, until he appeared on CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage alongside his father Peter this week and revealed the full picture. He has torn his bicep, rotator cuff and labrum, dislocated his shoulder, and faces between ten and twelve months of rehabilitation following two separate surgical procedures. He acknowledged that he may have already played his last professional game of football.
Peter Schmeichel filled in the background during the same interview, revealing that the injury originally occurred in March 2025 when Kasper was playing for Denmark against Portugal in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. Despite that, he missed only four Celtic matches before returning to action, suggesting he had been playing with painkilling injections for the better part of a year. Whether that was well managed by the club is a question with an uncomfortable answer, and it fits a pattern of poor decision-making that Celtic supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with.
From a Celtic standpoint, even in the most optimistic scenario, Schmeichel’s contract expires in the summer. He has almost certainly made his final appearance for the club. Sinisalo will continue as first choice for the remainder of the campaign, covering both the Premiership run-in and the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren at Hampden in April. The Finn has been reliable when called upon, but there are genuine questions about whether he represents the level Celtic should be aspiring to on a long-term basis.
A new goalkeeper will need to be recruited in the summer, either to compete with Sinisalo or to take the number one jersey outright. Celtic’s recent history in the position has leaned toward experienced options in their mid-to-late thirties, with Craig Gordon, Fraser Forster, Joe Hart and Schmeichel all fitting that profile. If that approach continues, Angus Gunn of Nottingham Forest is one name worth monitoring. Manuel Neuer, who will be out of contract in the summer, is another whose name will inevitably surface, however unlikely that destination might seem.
Whatever direction the club takes, the goalkeeper position demands urgent attention this summer. And whatever feelings supporters have about Schmeichel’s final months at the club, his injury revelation puts his struggles this season in a new and more sympathetic light.
