Jean-Philippe Mateta appears to be nearing the end of his time at Selhurst Park. After a winter transfer window filled with drama, fresh reports suggest that the Crystal Palace striker is still highly motivated to secure a move to Italy.
A Winter Move That Vanished
During the January window, both AC Milan and Juventus showed significant interest in the Frenchman. Milan went as far as reaching an agreement with Crystal Palace to finalize the transfer. However, the deal collapsed at the final hurdle. Medical experts raised red flags regarding the striker’s fitness, specifically a lingering knee issue. At the time, reports from Italy indicated that three separate doctors advised Milan to abandon the pursuit.
Despite the setback, Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, later hinted that the door was not permanently closed. While Mateta chose a conservative recovery path instead of surgery, his return to the pitch has been successful. Since returning in March, the 28-year-old has featured in nine matches and scored three goals, bringing his season total to 13 goals and three assists across 43 appearances.

Speculation reached a boiling point last week following a social media post from Mateta’s agent, Paul Latouche. The representative shared a photo of himself in the VIP section of the San Siro during the scoreless draw between AC Milan and Juventus. His presence in the company of officials from both clubs suggests that negotiations may be back on the table.

The situation serves as a strategic crossroads for Crystal Palace. Mateta will enter the final year of his contract after this season, meaning this summer represents the last chance for the club to command a significant transfer fee.
