Interim manager Martin O’Neill has sent a clear message to Tomas Cvancara: improve your performance or stay on the sidelines.
The Czech striker was a notable absentee from the matchday squad during Celtic’s dominant 6-2 victory over St Mirren on Sunday. Before the game began, O’Neill clarified that the forward’s omission was a tactical choice rather than a result of injury.
This decision appeared significant given the personnel on the pitch. Daizen Maeda was moved into a central role, while Junior Adamu and Kelechi Iheanacho were preferred as the attacking options on the bench.
Cvancara arrived on loan from Borussia Monchengladbach and was initially a fixture in the lineup. However, a return of just two goals and two assists in 13 matches has seen his stock fall. O’Neill emphasized that every player in the squad must now fight to keep their place.
Discussing his selection choices, O’Neill noted that he opted for some rotation following the recent semi-final. He specifically highlighted that Junior Adamu had earned his spot through exceptionally strong performances in training. He concluded that players simply have to compete for their positions in the team.

O’Neill confirmed that Schmeichel remains under contract but noted that his immediate future depends on medical evaluations.
