Celtic are facing a major call at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, with Kelechi Iheanacho’s deal at Parkhead set to run out at the end of June.
The Nigerian forward signed an initial one-year contract when he joined the Glasgow side in September 2025, completing a free move just after the summer transfer window closed.
Sevilla had terminated his agreement on deadline day, allowing him to complete the switch to the Scottish Premiership holders, where he signed a short-term deal that included an option for an additional year.
However, Iheanacho has managed just three goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season, with two separate hamstring injuries disrupting his campaign.
He has also lacked sharpness in front of goal, registering only two goals from 3.62 expected goals (xG) in the Premiership so far, highlighting inefficiency in finishing.
Celtic considering summer move for a new striker
Based on his performances and recurring fitness concerns since arriving from Sevilla, Celtic would be wise not to trigger the extension clause in his contract.
The forward has not contributed enough throughout the campaign to justify another season at the club, which is why parting ways this summer appears to be the sensible option.
That said, the Hoops must ensure they line up a replacement in advance, so they are not left scrambling for a striker late in the transfer window.
According to the Daily Record, Celtic are already exploring a potential move for Sheffield United striker Tyrese Campbell ahead of the summer window.
The report indicates that the Scottish side made initial enquiries in January, but the Blades were unwilling to negotiate at the time as they were focused on avoiding relegation from the Championship.
By the summer, though, Campbell will have just a year remaining on his contract at Bramall Lane, and Sheffield United may consider selling the 26-year-old.
It is also noted that both Celtic and Rangers are keeping tabs on his situation, suggesting there could be competition for his signature.
Why Campbell could be a better option than Iheanacho
Securing Campbell early in the window would allow Celtic to release Iheanacho at the end of his contract without concern.
The English striker could step in immediately as a replacement, with his performances in England indicating he would be a notable improvement for whoever takes charge following Martin O’Neill.
Iheanacho has struggled with consistency in front of goal, falling short of his xG by nearly two goals in the league this season.
He has also proven unreliable due to injury setbacks. In contrast, Campbell has missed just one matchday squad in the Championship this season, demonstrating strong availability.
This reliability suggests he would be a more dependable option week in, week out. Availability is often crucial, and Campbell has shown he can deliver in that regard.
In addition, the Sheffield United forward has been productive, scoring 16 Championship goals since the beginning of last season.
Campbell has also exceeded his xG figures this season, unlike Iheanacho, who has consistently underperformed. The same trend was evident last year when Campbell scored ten goals from 7.88 xG.
These numbers point to Campbell being a more clinical finisher, which could make him far more effective at Parkhead.
Looking at their respective performances during the 2025/26 season, Campbell appears more likely to stay fit, score consistently, and convert chances more efficiently than Iheanacho.
For that reason, Celtic should prioritise a move to bring the 26-year-old striker to Glasgow as a direct replacement for the outgoing Nigerian forward.
