Leicester City’s attacking struggles continue to undermine their survival bid, with Stephy Mavididi’s performance at Sheffield Wednesday proving even more disappointing than Patson Daka’s wasteful showing.
The Foxes have managed just three goals from 50 shots across their last three Championship outings, drawing with Watford, Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday despite creating numerous opportunities. Against the division’s bottom side, goalkeeper Pierce Charles made 11 saves to deny Leicester victory.
Daka, who faces an uncertain future with his contract expiring this summer, spurned four chances at Hillsborough with only one shot on target. The Zambian striker did contribute Jordan Ayew’s equaliser, but his overall contribution remained frustratingly inconsistent for a player who once cost £23 million.
However, Mavididi’s display was arguably more concerning. The former Arsenal youth product managed just two shots and one successful dribble against a defence that has been regularly exposed this season. More troubling was his carelessness in possession, surrendering the ball 18 times in promising attacking positions.
The contrast with his 2023/24 form is stark. Under Enzo Maresca, Mavididi contributed 12 goals and six assists as Leicester secured the Championship title. Now, in a relegation battle requiring fight and precision, the 27-year-old appears ill-equipped for the physical and mental demands.
Gary Rowett has managed just one win from nine matches in charge, with Leicester’s failure to convert dominance into points threatening their second tier status. While Daka at least provided an assist, Mavididi offered little beyond misplaced passes and anonymous wing play.
The manager requires significantly more from his attacking players in the remaining fixtures. With survival hanging by a thread, performances like Mavididi’s at Hillsborough suggest some players are not responding to the gravity of the situation.
