Leeds United moved another step closer to securing their Premier League status with a hard-earned point at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
Prior to kick-off, most supporters would have gladly accepted a draw from this fixture. Yet given the adversity Leeds overcame, particularly the contentious dismissal of Gabriel Gudmundsson, the result feels even more valuable. Reduced to ten men, the Whites displayed tremendous resilience to preserve their clean sheet throughout the second half.
Wayne Rooney was among several prominent pundits who leaped to Gudmundsson’s defence, the former Manchester United star describing the Swedish defender’s sending off as “a disgrace.”
However, the controversy did not end with the red card itself. Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood directed his ire towards Palace defender Jaydee Canvot for his conduct immediately following the dismissal.
With Leeds down to ten men on the cusp of half-time, Canvot was observed celebrating the decision with the enthusiasm of a match-winner. His reaction drew sharp criticism from Leeds legends Simon Grayson and Dominic Matteo, who branded the display “disrespectful” and “embarrassing.”
Sherwood echoed these sentiments during his Sky Sports analysis: “I couldn’t believe what I was looking at. It’s a poor decision in the first place because it’s not a second yellow card for Gudmundsson. If he’d remembered booking him the first time, he’d have never sent him off for that. The Palace players got around him and said, ‘You’ve already given him a yellow’. But to celebrate like that is an absolute disgrace. What are you doing there? It baffled me, it really did.
“Why are you doing that? I just don’t like it. I think it’s disrespectful. If I was a Leeds player, I’d have said, ‘Grow up, mate, what are you doing?'”
Sherwood continued his condemnation: “What did it actually guarantee you? It didn’t guarantee them anything. They’d have lost the game if Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his penalty anyway. Just concentrate on playing football. All this nonsense has annoyed me.”
While the flashpoints dominated the headlines, Leeds’ defensive organisation proved equally noteworthy. Welsh centre-back Joe Rodon epitomised the determination required to survive with a numerical disadvantage, having shifted to a wide central role following Jaka Bijol’s return to the heart of defence.
The statistics underlined Rodon’s influence. He prevailed in seven of ten duels, recorded ten clearances, and even contributed one key pass according to Sofascore data.
Such was the cohesion of Leeds’ rearguard action in the second period that manager Daniel Farke may be tempted to field an unchanged backline for the upcoming Brentford fixture at Elland Road.
