Celtic have stepped up their pursuit of Xaver Schlager after learning the midfielder will leave RB Leipzig at the end of the season, with a pre contract proposal already put to the player.
The Austrian international has decided against extending his stay in Germany, turning down a new deal following a series of talks with Leipzig officials. His current contract runs out this summer and the Bundesliga club confirmed on Friday evening that he will depart once the campaign concludes.
With that decision now public, Celtic have moved quickly by submitting what has been described as a firm offer for next season. Schlager, who is rated at around €10 million, is expected to attract significant interest, with Juventus and several English clubs also monitoring his situation. However, the Scottish champions are hopeful they can convince him to make the move to Glasgow after missing out on him late in the January window.
The former Red Bull Salzburg and Wolfsburg midfielder remains a key figure for Austria and is on course to earn his 50th international cap during the upcoming international break. He is also expected to be part of his country’s plans heading into the World Cup.
In a statement confirming his departure, Leipzig said the decision followed open and respectful discussions between both parties. The club confirmed Schlager would leave when his contract expires, bringing an end to a spell that began with his move from Wolfsburg in 2022. During his time at the Red Bull Arena, he made 97 appearances, scoring four goals and providing nine assists, while lifting the DFB Pokal and DFL Supercup in 2023.
Sporting director Marcel Schäfer praised the midfielder’s contribution, admitting the club made every effort to secure an extension. He said Leipzig respected Schlager’s wish to seek a new challenge and thanked him for his commitment and professionalism, adding that both sides remain focused on achieving their objectives for the remainder of the season.
Schlager also addressed supporters through the club’s website, reflecting fondly on his time in Leipzig. He described the trophy wins in 2023 as standout moments and stressed how settled he has felt at the club. However, he explained that a desire for a fresh experience ultimately drove his decision.
He insisted his focus remains firmly on finishing strongly with Leipzig, promising to give everything for the club and its supporters until his final appearance before closing this chapter of his career on a positive note.
