Tensions at the King Power Stadium finally boiled over last week, leading to the dismissal of Marti Cifuentes after a humiliating loss to Oxford United. That defeat dropped Leicester to 16th place and effectively ended his short and troubled reign. For a side recently relegated from the Premier League, the lack of energy, ambition and promotion momentum has been alarming.
With Cifuentes gone, club legend Andy King has been asked to take temporary charge. His first match at the helm ended in a sobering 2-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic, a game shaped by Caleb Okoli’s early red card and a missed penalty from Jordan Ayew. While King’s status among supporters is unquestioned, the result highlighted just how urgently Leicester need a long-term solution in the dugout, as well as improvements to a threadbare squad.
Attention has quickly turned to possible replacements, with names such as Gary Rowett and former Southampton boss Russell Martin being discussed. Among supporters, however, the loudest calls have been for Nigel Pearson to return for a third spell. Despite that clamour, Mirror Football reports that Leicester’s hierarchy have not approached Pearson and have no plans to do so.
According to the report, club officials have yet to make any contact with their former manager as they continue their search for Cifuentes’ successor. The lack of movement suggests a deliberate decision to look forward rather than revisit the past, even if Pearson’s reputation for resilience and leadership remains strong.
Still, in a campaign marked by decline and tight financial limits, overlooking a figure who knows the club inside out and has guided it through crisis before could prove a risky call. Pearson’s health may be a consideration, but the choice to rule him out entirely underlines how uncertain Leicester’s path has become at a critical moment in their season.
