Leeds United have officially completed the transfer of James Trafford from Manchester City. The England goalkeeper arrives on a long-term contract for a fee exceeding £40 million, establishing him as the most expensive signing in the history of the club.
Leeds had targeted Trafford from the start of the summer transfer window. Once formal discussions with Manchester City commenced, the player quickly agreed to personal terms. Despite fan anxiety over minor delays during negotiations, internal sources maintained confidence that the deal would be finalized.
Trafford becomes the third arrival of the summer transfer window under the 49ers ownership group, which continues to rebuild the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Trafford Dismisses Criticism Over Transfer Fee
Debate has surrounded the size of the transfer fee, with some commentators questioning the investment. However, Leeds United management views Trafford as a long-term cornerstone for the club.
In his first interview with LUTV, the goalkeeper delivered a direct response when asked about the pressure accompanying his price tag.
”I don’t really care if I have a point to prove,” Trafford stated. “I know my own abilities. I go out and try as hard as I can and have as much fun as I can. Everything that comes with it is what it is. I am really excited and just really happy that it is finally done. I can get onto preparing for the new season and can focus on getting in with everyone next week.”
He also expressed his admiration for the club and its fanbase.
”It is one amazing club, full of energy and passion, both the club and the fans. That goes a really long way because the energy of the team, the players, and the fans contribute to results, performances, and overall improvement. It is just a great place for anyone, let alone myself, to play.”
A Proven Track Record
Trafford arrives at Elland Road with significant achievements already on his resume. During his time at Manchester City, he contributed to two major domestic cup victories, recording clean sheets in both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals.
Prior to that, his spell at Burnley saw him equal the all-time Championship clean sheet record while allowing just 16 goals across the season. He was also selected for the PFA League One Team of the Year in 2023.
Given his past performances and his trajectory toward becoming a regular for the England national team, Leeds United have invested in a proven talent who enters the squad with a well-established reputation.
