Kieron Bowie has opened up about his decision to reject interest from Glasgow’s heavyweights in favor of a move to Italy. The former Hibernian striker completed a £7.5 million transfer to Hellas Verona during the January window, snubbing potential moves to Rangers, Celtic, and Premier League side Wolves.
Seeking a Cultural Shift
The 23-year-old Scotland international enjoyed a productive first half of the season at Easter Road, netting nine goals before his departure. While the allure of the Old Firm is often undeniable for players in Scotland, Bowie felt a strong desire to broaden his horizons beyond the United Kingdom.
Speaking to the Hibs Observer, Bowie explained that he wanted to experience something culturally distinct. He noted that while interest from the Glasgow giants had been mentioned, his heart was set on a challenge abroad.
The “Scottish Pathway” to Italy
Bowie is the latest in a growing line of Scottish talent to find success in Serie A. He credits former Hibs teammate Josh Doig, who previously made the same move to Verona, as a major influence on his decision. After receiving glowing reviews about the club and the city from Doig, Bowie felt confident in his choice.
He also drew inspiration from other compatriots like Aaron Hickey, Lewis Ferguson, and Lennon Miller, all of whom have flourished in the Italian top flight. Seeing their success gave him the belief that he could also thrive in a different tactical and cultural environment.
Life at Hellas Verona
Despite Bowie’s individual efforts, it has been a difficult period for Hellas Verona. Since his arrival, the club has struggled for form and currently sits second bottom in the league table. A recent defeat to AC Milan has left them ten points adrift of safety with only five matches remaining, making relegation seem almost certain.
On a personal level, Bowie has remained a consistent starter under manager Paolo Sammarco. His highlights include:
