Joel Mvuka produced another disappointing performance off the bench against Rangers on Sunday, continuing a frustrating pattern that has defined his loan spell at Celtic since arriving from Lorient in January.
Celtic secured their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals through a penalty shootout, though the overall performance was underwhelming. Martin O’Neill made several changes to give fringe players an opportunity to impress, and few took their chance convincingly. Mvuka was among the most disappointing, offering little impact during his second-half cameo.
Reaction after the game reflected that assessment. 67 Hail Hail awarded him a 4/10 rating, describing him as all over the place, with a heavy touch, poor crossing and a lack of physicality when called upon to defend. Tomas Cvancara also came in for criticism following the tie, but Mvuka’s display was considered the worse of the two.
The two January arrivals have both struggled to find any real consistency, but Mvuka in particular has rarely produced a performance to suggest he is operating at the level required for a side chasing Hearts in the Premiership title race. At this point it would be difficult to make a case for him being good enough for what Celtic need right now.
Celtic do hold an option to make his loan deal permanent at the end of the season, but based on what he has shown since arriving, it is hard to see the club choosing to activate it. Loan signings, especially those made in January, need to contribute quickly. Players moving to a new country and league are always going to need time to adapt, and Mvuka is young enough that his long-term potential should not be written off. But the reality of a loan arrangement is that time is the one luxury rarely available, and he has not done enough to make the decision a difficult one.
