The musician was unimpressed by the spot-kick given to the Light Blues during their thrashing of Kilmarnock.
Sir Rod Stewart is urging Scottish authorities to disclose their football loyalties in an effort to guarantee “impartial referees” are selected.
The iconic Celtic-obsessed singer made the remarks while talking about Rangers’ penalty against Kilmarnock – even though he acknowledged it WAS a correct decision.
The Hoops superfan was frustrated after the Light Blues secured a 5-1 victory over the Scottish Premiership battlers, reducing the distance to league leaders Hearts to three points – and overtaking the Hoops into second place. Dom Thompson was dismissed for Killie after only four minutes for a challenge in the penalty area on Djeidi Gassama, with James Tavernier converting from the spot.
Rugby Park manager Neil McCann admitted he could understand the ruling made by referee David Dickinson – but rocker Stewart remained dissatisfied. Even while accepting it was the right judgement, Stewart shared his conspiracy claim on talkSPORT alongside fellow Celtic supporter Alan Brazil.
He said: “It’s funny last night, I have got to bring this up, so Rangers got a penalty. All my mates in Scotland call up and say ‘Rangers got a penalty, same old bias’ – why can’t we do something about it?
“It’s true in the EPL [English Premier League], why can’t we have referees that are not associated with any football teams? I know they go through a strict system to find out who they do support, why can’t we do that in Scotland?
“I know Jock Stein has been going on about it since the seventies. I saw the penalty – it was a penalty, it was a sending off, but why can’t we have unbiased referees?”
Brazil replied: “Speak to my colleague [Rangers supporter], and he will say the opposite – he says we get preferential treatment from referees.
I am like ‘what?’ – ever since I was a kid watching Celtic we used to get stuffed all the time by the officials, but Rangers fans won’t have it.”
Stewart continued: “No, well how can we change that? It doesn’t make Scottish football look very good, in that respect.”
Co-host Gabby Agbonlahor later interrupted with a message from Rangers legend Ally McCoist – who sensed “panicking” from the pair as Danny Rohl’s team surge up the standings.
He said: “Coisty is messaging me. Panicking. They are all panicking, he says.”
