Kyogo Furuhashi Ruled Out for Season as Birmingham City Nightmare Continues
Former Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi has suffered another setback in his disastrous Birmingham City career, with the Japan international ruled out for the remainder of the campaign following shoulder surgery.
The 31-year-old, who joined the Championship club for £10 million last summer after an unhappy spell at Rennes, has endured a miserable debut season at St Andrew’s. He has managed just three goals in 31 appearances, including only one league strike, and recently lost his place in the starting lineup under manager Chris Davies.
Kyogo missed Birmingham’s 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Good Friday, with Davies subsequently confirming the forward had undergone an operation to address a long-standing shoulder problem that dated back to his time at Celtic Park. “Kyogo is out for the season. He’s had his shoulder operated on, which was an ongoing thing that he kept trying to put off. In the end we decided to get it done and then he’s back for pre-season,” Davies stated.
The former Celtic favourite, who scored 85 goals in 165 games for the Glasgow club and became a fans’ favourite at Parkhead, faces serious questions about his future. He was linked with a move to Major League Soccer before their transfer deadline passed on March 26, and notably rejected a sensational loan return to Celtic.
With Birmingham planning to strengthen this summer as they push for Premier League promotion, Kyogo may have played his final match for the club. His injury-plagued, goal-shy campaign has fallen dramatically short of expectations for a player once considered one of Scottish football’s most reliable finishers.
