Speaking to Celtic TV ahead of kick-off, the 73-year-old was questioned on his alterations to the starting XI and the unavoidable choice he faced. Many would have assumed Welsh was higher in the hierarchy than Murray, yet O’Neill felt the latter had earned his chance, making no reference at all to his fellow defender. He said: “Trusty and Scales have been terrific in the backline during my couple of spells here. It’s a big, big step up for Dane. I think he’s up for it, I think he’s ready for the challenge and let’s hope it goes well for him.”
What does the future hold for Stephen Welsh?
It is understood that Welsh will remain at Celtic for the rest of the campaign, but this situation is unlikely to match his expectations. Acting as cover behind Trusty and Scales is one thing, but being pushed down to fourth choice is bound to cause frustration. He had even been mentioned as a possible recall to the Scotland squad. That prospect now feels a long way off, particularly if he is unable to earn a start against Falkirk.
