The SFA’s KMI Panel Has Finally Spoken: The Explosive Truth About That Controversial Late Penalty Awarded to Celtic Against Rangers — And You Won’t Believe What They Actually Ruled About the Decision That Has Everyone Talking

The Scottish FA’s KMI panel has unanimously determined that the penalty from which Celtic scored their equaliser against Rangers was correctly given.

Martin O’Neill’s side recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a draw in last weekend’s Premiership derby, with Reo Hatate’s late goal ensuring the comeback. The Japanese midfielder converted from the second rebound after taking the spot kick, following two earlier saves by Jack Butland.

The penalty was awarded after Dujon Sterling stopped a Daizen Maeda header with his arm before Butland could collect the ball, an incident initially missed by on-field referee John Beaton. However, following a VAR check, the decision was overturned and a penalty was granted.

The KMI panel has now ruled 3:0 that Beaton made an error by not awarding the penalty in the first instance, and by the same margin agreed that VAR was correct to intervene, confirming that the final call was the right one.

Both teams will face each other again in the Scottish Cup this Sunday, with Don Robertson officiating as referee. Andrew Dallas will oversee VAR, assisted by Matthew MacDermid.
