Former Referees Dismiss Rumors of Celtic Match Abandonment After Pitch Invasion
Fears that Celtic’s title-winning victory over Hearts could be overturned have been firmly shut down by refereeing experts, despite chaotic scenes at Celtic Park.

The post-match chaos sparked intense debate on social media regarding whether referee Don Robertson actually blew the final whistle or if the match was technically abandoned.
According to official regulations, if a pitch invasion prevents a referee from blowing the final whistle, the match is classified as abandoned. The Scottish Football Association (SFA) would then be forced to investigate. In extreme scenarios, this can result in a replay or a 3-0 forfeit victory for the opposition, a ruling that would completely alter the destination of the league title.
Anxious fans pointed to a recent Prague derby as a worrying precedent. During that fixture, Slavia Prague led Sparta 3-2 in stoppage time before a massive pitch invasion occurred. The referee abandoned the match, and Sparta was subsequently awarded a 3-0 victory, dramatically shifting the Czech title race.
Experts Clarify the Rules
Former SFA referees Steve Conroy and Des Roache have moved quickly to reassure fans that the Celtic fixture was not abandoned. Speaking on The Ref’s View podcast social media account, the duo clarified that a referee has full authority over how a game concludes.
“It is up to the referee when the game ends. He doesn’t need to blow the whistle, he just needs to signal. The game was not abandoned!”
Because Robertson was able to officially signal the end of the match by alternative means, the 3-1 result stands, and Celtic’s title victory remains secure.
