Former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has entered the race to become Celtic’s next manager, joining an increasingly competitive field to succeed Martin O’Neill at Parkhead.
The Hoops are conducting an extensive search for their next permanent boss following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. With seven league matches remaining, Celtic sit third in the Scottish Premiership, six points adrift of leaders Hearts and facing an uphill battle to retain their title after losing eight of their 31 fixtures.
According to former club CEO Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou had appeared the frontrunner. The Dane has impressed at Fir Park this season, with his side boasting the best defensive record in the division and sitting directly behind Celtic in the table. However, Motherwell’s recent dip in form and Askou’s lack of European experience have raised questions about his suitability.
Keane’s credentials include league titles with Ferencvaros and Maccabi Tel Aviv, plus substantial European competition experience. The Guardian previously reported his openness to the Celtic role, and the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham has removed one potential alternative destination for the Irishman.
International managers also feature among the candidates. Portugal boss Roberto Martinez has been linked, with his existing relationship with Celtic coach Shaun Maloney potentially proving influential. Wales manager Craig Bellamy also has admirers within the Parkhead hierarchy, though his stock may have fallen following his side’s failure to qualify for the World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties.
Celtic’s recent form offers little encouragement, with just seven points taken from the previous 15 available. O’Neill will hope the international break has provided a reset, but the club are clearly planning for a new era regardless of whether an unlikely title recovery materialises.
